GETTING GROUNDED

Life can feel overwhelming at times. This is because we begin to concern ourselves with the past or the future, forgetting that we're here, in the now.
"Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have"
"Have your dwelling place in the Now and pay brief visits to the past and future when required to deal with the practical aspects of your life situation"
- The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle
I constantly catch myself daydreaming about the past or the future, but don't pay nearly enough attention to the current moment that I'm in. The past is generally perceived as a portion of your life that helps define who you are, while the future is filled with your biggest hopes and desires, but that part in-between, the current moment, is not thought of, or savoured, enough.
So here are some tips to bring yourself back to now, to ground yourself when life begins to feel overwhelming.
1. Step Outside: I often stand outside by myself with a cup of coffee in hand. I observe my surroundings by looking, listening, and simply enjoying the moment of solitude.
2. Gratitude Journal: Write down what you're grateful for in the moment. Who or what is making you feel some kind of positive emotion? Expressing your gratitude on paper focuses your attention on it, making it feel more palpable.
3. Meditate: Sit or lay down, get nice and comfortable. Close your eyes and breathe. Notice how your body contracts and expands as you inhale and exhale, the frequency of your breath, and the various sensations your body is having.

Embrace the current moment in its entirety, for it's all we really have.
